Who Orders Your Steps?

The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord: and he delighteth in his way. Psalm 37:23 (KJV)

Who orders your steps? This holiday season, I am trying to live in the present, taking each day as it comes and trusting God to order my steps. Though I make a regular habit of asking God to guide my steps, I have been more purposeful about it lately. Where usually this request would be part of my morning devotions, it is now something I pause and ask several times throughout the day. When I get to a place where it is time to move to a new task, I quiet my heart and listen.

I would like to say I decided to do this because of my great wisdom, but that is not the truth. The truth is that I surrendered my days because, obviously, I am not in control. When things get busier because of the season, interruptions can cause stress.  The last couple of months my days have been “interrupted” by things unforeseen. But they were not unforeseen by God.  He knows what is coming at all times. So, it makes a great deal of sense to ask Him to guide our days.  When I allow God to plan my day, it is not interrupted. It flows. Even unexpected things, like trips to the emergency room, do not create stress. I know God has a plan. And He has proven that to me over and over.

I have a few things left to do for the holiday, but I am confident the important ones will be accomplished. As I wrap presents, add a few more decorations, and look forward to baking and setting the table, I am taking time to reflect on the joy of the season and thank God that my steps are ordered by Him.
